Nowadays, using a VPN is necessary for any company. But if you have never worked with network switches and set up a secure VPN before, then you might fall victim to one of the common mistakes that often get made. Here is a guide on how you can avoid these mistakes and establish reliable private internet access for your entire business.

Use a More Secure Authentication Method

One of the worst things that you can when trying to set up a VPN is allowing clients to connect even if they don’t negotiate an authentication method. This defeats the very purpose of a secure VPN.

Firewall Security

Using an SSL VPN provides an additional layer of security for a remote desktop.

But don’t just pick any authentication method, make sure it is a secure one. This typically includes either EAP: MS-CHAP v2 or MS-CHA. But you want to make sure that you stay away from Password Authentication Protocol (PAP) or Shiva Password Authentication Protocol (SPAP).

Use Higher Amounts of Encryption

You want to always make sure that there is a lot of encryption between the network access server and the remote clients. There are a few different options for encryption strength that you can choose from.

While you could go with no encryption at all, this is not a good decision, especially when it comes to the VPN being used by the entire company. Instead, you’ll want to look for one that is at least MPPE 56-bit, which is considered strong encryption. Or you can go one step higher and use a MPPE 128-bit encryption, which is the strongest level.

By following these steps, you can help ensure that you properly set up a secure VPN for your small business. To get more help with ensuring your company’s IT services are properly taken care of, contact our team of professionals at One Point Sync.
